Subsystence

An innovative online magazine showcasing the creative works of artists covering a variety of disciplines. A collaborative project conceived, designed, developed, and maintained by Charles Adler (Creative Director) and Ken Meier (Editor in Chief), this duo continually searched for fresh talent to expose to an ever-growing audience. The concept was simple. A complete and total redesign each issue, not only providing a platform for artists in genres such as photography, poetry, fiction and music, but an environment for designers to develop a site experience driven by the specific concept of the issue. A design ambition typically delivered in print, but rarely online, the Subsystence team continually aimed to break the mold.

With two honorable mentions in the acclaimed “May 1st Reboot” redesign series, including famed web zealot Jeffrey Zeldman, and featured on various art oriented sites, Subsystence is destined to resurface from its current hiatus.
